Apple begins rolling out ID support in Wallet in its seventh state

Starting today, Apple is rolling out support for digital IDs in Apple Wallet to iPhone users in Hawaii. The option launched in Ohio last month, and Apple announced it was coming to California two weeks ago.

Support for adding your ID to Apple Wallet in Hawaii appears to be rolling out slowly. If you tap the option in the Wallet app, you may be presented with an option to join a waitlist, which states:

Thank you for your interest in adding your driver’s license to Wallet. Due to a high volume of requests, the service is currently busy. Would you like to be notified when it’s available?

With the addition of Hawaii, Apple Wallet’s Credentials feature is now available or rolling out in seven states:

  • Ohio
  • Maryland
  • Arizona
  • Georgia
  • Colorado
  • California (coming soon)
  • Hawaii (phased deployment)

In these states, iPhone users can add their ID to Apple Wallet by following these steps:

  • Open the Wallet app on your iPhone and tap the icon + icon in the upper right corner
  • Choose Driving license Or State Identity Card
  • Faucet Add to iPhone and Apple Watch Or Add to iPhone
  • You may need to log in to your state’s DMV/MVD website to authorize your ID to be added to Apple Wallet

Where can you actually use credentials stored in Apple Wallet? Here’s what Apple says:

With your ID in Wallet, you no longer need to physically take it out. Simply add it to the Wallet app and use it to prove your age or identity at select businesses and venues. You can also use it to travel through select TSA checkpoints. Showing your ID just got a whole lot easier.

You can find a complete map of airports that accept digital IDs at security checkpoints on the TSA website.

Currently, fees for using your Apple Wallet ID at retail locations may vary. Apple says it will be accepted at “select retail locations and locations,” but doesn’t provide further details.
