Steelers name Russell Wilson as starting quarterback

Russell Wilson entered the preseason with the pole position to be named Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback and he didn’t give it up.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin named Wilson as the team’s starter for their Week 1 game at Atlanta on Wednesday. Tomlin had previously said he would make the announcement at the end of the weekbut decides to put a premature end to the suspense.

Tomlin sent a pretty strong signal about whether Wilson or Justin Fields would get the nod by playing Wilson for a series in the preseason finale. That sequence ended with a touchdown, something Wilson couldn’t do in his first preseason outing, and the Steelers are hoping there will be plenty of those in the regular season as well.

Wilson’s results in Denver over the past two seasons leave more than a little reason to doubt that’s the case, but Wilson will have his chance to turn things around in Pittsburgh.
