HOUSTON (KIAH) — A man is facing charges and a thief remains at large as a 9-year-old girl remains in critical condition after she was shot dead in an ATM robbery Monday night in the Southwest. west of Houston.
At approximately 9:45 p.m., at a Chase bank on the 2900 block of Woodridge near Winkler, a man was being robbed by a suspected thief.
As the suspect fled, the robbery victim, 41, pulled out his gun and began shooting and hit a truck the shooter thought was involved. One of the bullets hit a van carrying an innocent family of five, driving Winkler down.
A 9-year-old girl in the truck was hit by a bullet and is now in critical condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital.
Houston police say Tuesday morning they don’t know if the robbery suspect returned fire, but they said the robbery suspect fled the scene. The victim of the robbery called 911 to report the robbery, unaware that one of his bullets had hit the child.
“It just goes to show that whenever there are guns, the danger to innocent bystanders is extremely high and everyone raises their voices and prays for that innocent child,” the HPD chief executive said, Matt Slinkard.
The rest of the girl’s family are currently by her side, praying and hoping for her recovery.
Meanwhile, the shooter who was nearly robbed now faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The suspect’s name and booking photo will be released later today once the charges are finalized.
Anyone with information about this case or the robbery that preceded it is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
