9-year-old child accused of beating his brother before his death

Records show a 9-year-old Alabama girl was charged with assault after she allegedly used a broomstick to beat her younger brother, who later died

MOBILE, Alabama — A 9-year-old Alabama girl has been charged with assault after she allegedly used a broomstick to beat her younger brother, who later died, records show.

Court records show Yolanda Coale, the boy’s aunt and legal guardian, told officers she woke up on Thursday to the sound of children screaming. She said she found the girl hitting her brother with a broomstick, causing injuries.

Officers called to the house found the boy unresponsive and Coale, 53, was charged with aggravated child abuse the following day. Handwritten notes on court documents say the girl was charged with assault, but neither police nor prosecutors have returned messages asking for more details.

Coale’s bail was set at $150,000 and a hearing was scheduled for Wednesday. Coale did not have an attorney who could speak on his behalf, court documents showed.

The boy had wounds on his body that indicated long-term abuse, records show, and an autopsy will determine the cause of his death. No one has been charged in the child’s death.
