8 train cars derail and crash into Pewaukee Pond

PEWAUKEE, WIS (CBS 58) – Residents of Pewaukee have been left agitated by an early morning train derailment on Saturday, March 19.

“When the light started to get brighter here, we could see exactly what happened,” neighbor April Hadju said.

At 6:37 a.m., the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Pewaukee Fire Department responded to a report in the Somerset Ln area. and Parkside Road. in the city of Pewaukee.

“It was early in the morning, I woke up to a shrill metal noise, I thought it was a snowplow,” Hadju said.

A Canadian Pacific freight train was traveling eastbound through the town of Pewaukee. The train was slowing to a stop when a boxcar derailed from the tracks, causing the derailment of a tank car and seven other boxcars.

That’s when people like Haju heard it all happen in their backyards.

“We didn’t realize it well, because we just heard the emergency brakes kick in, we thought oh maybe a deer in the tracks, but it could really be noisy,” Hadju said. , “I sat up in bed, I looked out the window I saw cars collapsing, then just a loud crash of metal.”

The tank car and six boxcars were empty except for one boxcar that was carrying lumber.

No injuries were reported, no private property was damaged, and no hazardous materials or environmental concerns were noted.

Hadju says she and people who live nearby are going to have to wait and see how long the cleaning process takes.

“I’m sure they’re investigating right now, so it’ll be interesting to see how they clean up,” Hadju said.

As we write this story, tanker trucks are blocking the road to the houses to the south on Parkside Rd.

The derailment is still under investigation by Canadian Pacific Railway.
