7.5 earthquake shakes northern Peru


LIMA (AP) – A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck northern Peru on Sunday, the United States Geological Institute said.

The earthquake occurred at 5:52 am local time (1052 GMT). Although it was extremely strong, it was relatively deep, measured at 112 kilometers, which usually reduces damage and casualties.

The epicenter was located 42 kilometers north-northwest of the coastal city of Barranca.
