64-year-old woman bitten by shark in New Smyrna Beach, officials say


A 64-year-old woman was bitten by a shark near the New Smyrna Beach pier just after 9 a.m. on Friday, officials told WESH 2 News. Volusia County beach safety officials said Adrienne Wisko was on a surfboard in 8 to 10 feet of water when the shark bit her on the foot. “Looks like she broke her foot, the bottom was shredded pretty well. The top ripped pretty well,” said victim’s son Derek Wikso. Wikso says her mother will likely undergo surgery after she encounters a shark near the New Smyrna Beach pier. Derek Wikso said his mother immediately knew what had happened. “She said she saw him and looked him straight in the eyes, clear as day. She says she will never forget him,” said Derek Wikso. Also home to an assortment of baitfish that larger fish, like sharks, feast on. According to Derek Wikso, his mother has spent most of her life surfing and will be back after she recovers – this is the first shark bite of 2021 in New Smyrna Beach.

Beach safety officials say the pier is one of the best surf spots on the east coast and is also home to an assortment of baitfish that larger fish, like sharks, feast on.

According to Derek Wikso, his mother has spent most of her life surfing and will return after her recovery.

This is the first shark bite of 2021 at New Smyrna Beach.
