FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. (WSVN) – Police are searching for those responsible for a shooting outside a Fort Lauderdale convenience store that sent a 6-year-old girl, a 16-year-old boy and a man to hospital.
According to Fort Lauderdale Police, several shooters opened fire outside Tony’s Market, in the area of Northwest Eighth Street and 22nd Road, just after 9.45 p.m. Sunday.
A 911 caller described the chaotic scene.
“There are people who are shot, people injured, a lot of gunfire going on,” he told the dispatcher.
Surveillance video from inside the business captured passers-by running and crouching inside the store. Some could be seen covering their ears.
Shortly after, three more people run inside. The last, a woman wearing a pink top, carried the 6-year-old girl who police said was caught in the crossfire.
“Oh my God! They’re inside the store. The little baby, the little baby. Can you hear the commotion?” Said the 911 caller.
“Yes, I hear the commotion. The ambulance is on its way, ”said the dispatcher.
Outside the door, the injured teenager and man were seen lying on the ground. They could be seen moving their sneakers but unable to get up.
Once there, Fort Lauderdale fire crews rescued the injured 6-year-old girl, who was lying on the ground inside the market. They tried to stop the bleeding and assessed the wound before picking it up and taking it away.
The victims were transported to Broward Health Medical Center. The 6-year-old was taken as a trauma alert.
7News cameras captured crime scene technicians placing evidence markers next to more than 50 shell casings left outside believed to be semi-automatic weapons and handguns.
“It’s like 10 people are shooting. It’s so many guns, ”a woman told the 911 dispatcher.
The store door was smashed and several cars could be seen with bullet holes inside. They were then towed away from the scene.
Officials said the injured children were recovering and should survive. The injured man was treated and released.
Officials said a man, Caleb Fields, was also shot and killed outside the same convenience store just over a year ago.
Detectives believe Fields has been targeted. No arrests were made during his shooting.
Fields was the father of four children.
His family is to organize a vigil on the anniversary of his death.
Police believe there was a block party near the market on Sunday night, so they are hoping there are people who know the shooters and may have seen something.
