Over the years we have seen a number of former NFL players attempting to make the transition to MMA. While a number of them failed, there have been a handful who have made it into the UFC with some success.

Eryk Anders had a brilliant college football career before starting his MMA career

Not surprisingly, many of the former NFL stars to move into the Octagon have competed in the heavyweight division. However, the only outlier is Eryk Anders, who fought in the Octagon in both middleweight and light heavyweight.

Unlike many athletes who moved on to MMA, Anders did not wrestle during his time in college. Instead, he enjoyed a brilliant football career at the University of Alabama, playing for the Crimson Tide as a linebacker.

“Ya Boi” helped his team win the 2009 BCS National Championships. After college, he was hired by the Cleveland Browns of the NFL. However, after failing to make a league appearance for them, he briefly joined the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League before giving up football altogether.

From there, ‘Ya Boi’ moved on to MMA, first as an amateur. He then turned pro in 2015. An 8-0 streak was enough to land him a contract with the biggest promotion in the world and he’s been there ever since, racking up a 6-6-1 streak and impressive at times.

Anders is yet to reach the title, but the athleticism and power he perfected during his footballing career certainly helped him in his victories against fighters such as Vinicius Moreira and Rafael Natal.
