CHICAGO (CBS) – A 39-year-old man faces five counts of murder, after rushing into the Waukesha Christmas parade on Sunday, killing five people and injuring more than 40 others.

“We are convinced that he acted alone. There is no evidence that this was a terrorist incident, ”he said.

Sources had told CBS News that Brooks may have been fleeing a separate crime scene, but Thompson said no police chase led to the incident.

Online court records have shown that a person named Darrell Brooks, with a date of birth making him 39, has two criminal cases pending in Milwaukee County. In one case, filed on November 5, he is charged with resisting or obstructing an officer, reckless homicide, disorderly conduct, jumping on bail and assault and battery. Records show a $ 1,000 bond was posted on Friday.

Thompson confirmed that an officer opened fire on Brooks’ vehicle as a red SUV during the incident to try to stop the vehicle, but stopped firing due to the large crowd on the parade. No one was shot and the officer who opened fire was placed on administrative leave.

Those who died after being struck by Brooks’ vehicle were between 52 and 81 years old.

At 9:55 a.m. on Monday, Children’s Wisconsin reported treating 18 children injured during the parade. Children’s Wisconsin said the injured children were between the ages of 3 and 16 and included three groups of siblings.

Health officials said all 18 children treated suffered facial abrasions and fractures, as well as serious head injuries. Six of the patients were sent for surgery last night and two more patients are undergoing surgery on Monday.

Waukesha Mayor Shawn Reilly said a prayer vigil would be held at 5 p.m. on Friday at Cutler Park.

“Last night we experienced an insane tragedy. Many of us took part in the parade and witnessed these horrific actions. We are all trying to process what we have been through, ”he said.

Entertainment group, the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies posted on Facebook saying their members were among those killed in the parade. The Milwaukee Dancing Grannies, ranging in age from their early 50s to mid-70s, perform in 25 parades a year.

In the post, the group said:

“The Milwaukee Dancing Grannies are devastated by this terrible tragedy which left people dead and injured during the Waukesha Christmas Parade.

Our group did what they loved, performing in front of crowds in a parade putting smiles on faces of all ages, filling them with joy and happiness. While playing, the grannies enjoyed hearing the cheers and applause from the crowd, which certainly made their faces smile and warmed their hearts.

Those who died were extremely passionate Grannies. Their eyes were shining… ..the joy of being a grandmother. They were the glue… held us together.

Our hearts are heavy in this most difficult time, as more and more information and updates will be available, they will be released. Please keep them, their families, their friends, the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies and all who live forever changed in your thoughts and prayers.

Police say Brooks walked through the barricades and went to the parade.

Waukesha Police urge people to avoid the city center. CBS 2’s Marissa Parra noted a number of blocked streets in the area afterwards. Thompson said roads will remain closed in the area for 24 hours.

Witnesses initially said they heard gunshots during the incident. Police now confirm that the shots came from an officer. They do not believe anyone inside the vehicle fired shots and say no passerby was injured.
