4 people died as I-95 wreckage caused hours-long closure at Florida-Georgia border

The driver of a tractor-trailer lost control of the vehicle, which began to overturn and hit a car, before crossing the center median into the northbound lanes of I-95, according to the Georgia Department of Public Security.

It was then hit by two other cars and another tractor-trailer before it “come to a complete stop,” according to a Georgia State Patrol news release.

Two passengers from the semi-trailer truck that caused the accident died at the scene from their injuries, the statement said. Two other passengers from one of the cars that struck the tractor-trailer when it entered northbound traffic also died of their injuries after being taken to hospital.

The tractor-trailer driver was taken to the same hospital and was “suspected to be under the influence of alcohol,” GSP said.

The charges will be dealt with GSP when the investigation is complete, according to the statement.

All northbound and southbound lanes of I-95 have since reopened after a several-hour closure caused by the crash, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.
