4 Glendale police officers on leave after video appears to show use of force in arrest

Four Glendale police officers have been placed on administrative leave after witnesses filmed police officers apparently using force during a shopping mall arrest.

At around 7:10 p.m. Saturday, plainclothes and uniformed officers responded to a theft from a business inside the Glendale Galleria shopping center, the department said in a press release on Wednesday.

Officials said “a fight ensued” when the suspect was attempted to be arrested at Dick’s Sporting Goods and officers used force. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of theft and forcibly resisting an officer.

Images of the incident, obtained by news organizations, show three men – including one in a police uniform – punching and kicking a person in the face while on the ground. A woman in civilian clothes holds the detainee’s legs.

CBSLA reported that the detained person was a teenager.

The department said officers will be put on leave while it investigates the arrest and looks for witnesses inside the mall or store who can provide more information.

“The police at Glendale are held to a high standard and we work hard to maintain the trust of our community,” the department said. “We take these types of incidents very seriously. “
