4 Germans arrested for paying tribute to Hitler’s birthplace – POLITICO
Patrolling officers escorted them to a police station for questioning. The woman claimed the salute was not serious, but authorities said they discovered a conversation with the other inmates on her cellphone containing Nazi-related messages and images.
The four individuals will be reported to prosecutors on suspicion of violating Austrian laws banning the display of Nazi symbols, police said.
Every year, around Hitler’s birthday, the authorities increase patrols around the house where he was born. The state-owned building is currently being transformed into a police station which will also host human rights training courses.
Hitler rose to power in Nazi Germany in the 1930s and led the country into World War II. His regime was responsible for the genocide of six million Jews during the Holocaust and the deaths of countless other minorities. Hitler’s warmongering ultimately led to the fall of Germany and his own suicide in 1945, as Allied forces closed in on Berlin.
