A 3-year-old boy died after falling from a back window on the first floor of his family’s home in Union County and was attacked by the family’s pit bulls in the backyard.
Rescuers arrived at Elizabeth’s home shortly before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and found the boy, who had suffered serious injuries. According to the Union County District Attorney’s Office, he fell about 10 feet and was bitten by two dogs.
The boy, whose name has not been released, was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after.
Neighbors told News 12 New Jersey they heard adults screaming and looked out the front door to see the boy being held by his parents as they waited for an ambulance and police to arrive .
Authorities said the cause of the boy’s death was not yet clear.
The county health department is quarantining the two dogs and the city says they could be euthanized.
Authorities say the parents are not yet facing criminal charges, but the investigation remains active.
