Law enforcement says three sheriff’s deputies were shot and one suspect was killed in confrontation in central Kansas
WINFIELD, Kansas — Three sheriff’s deputies were shot and injured and a suspect was killed in a shooting in central Kansas on Friday, law enforcement officials said.
Cowley County Sheriff David Falletti said deputies were responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle on US 77 north of Winfield. When they came into contact with a vehicle, three deputies were shot, Falletti said.
A woman alone in the car was found dead at the scene, Falletti said.
The three deputies were taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. The sheriff’s office said late Friday afternoon that two of the deputies were in good condition and could be released soon. The third deputy suffered more serious injuries but is also expected to recover, the sheriff’s office said.
Authorities have not released any additional information. The sheriff said investigators are trying to determine what happened before the shooting.
Winfield is approximately 36 miles (58 kilometers) southeast of Wichita.
This story has been corrected to show the shooting took place on Friday, not Thursday.
