3 dead, including a suspect, after shooting outside Cornerstone Church, a mega-church on the outskirts of Ames, Iowa


AMES, Iowa – A man shot and killed two women and apparently committed suicide Thursday night outside a church in Ames, authorities said.

The man killed the two women outside Cornerstone Church, a mega-church on the outskirts of Ames, Story County Sheriff’s Office Captain Nicholas Lennie told the Des Moines Register. Investigators did not know the ages of those killed, Lennie said.

The shooter appears to have subsequently shot himself, but his death is still under investigation, Lennie said.

The church is near Interstate 35, about 30 miles (48.28 kilometers) north of Des Moines.

A spokesperson for Cornerstone Church released the following statement: “Tonight a tragic shooting took place involving two young members of our Cornerstone Church community…Our hearts break for everyone involved, and we pray for all of them. the people affected, in particular the families of the victims. .”

The sheriff’s office did not identify those killed or provide details about what led to the shooting. A press conference is scheduled for Friday morning.

The sheriff’s office told KCCI-TV they received multiple calls at 6:51 p.m.
