3 dead in Publix supermarket shooting in Florida


The bodies of three people, including a child, were found at a Publix grocery store in Palm Beach County, Florida on Thursday morning, officials said, who said they were all shot dead.

Authorities were called to the store, in Royal Palm Beach, Fla., Around 11:39 a.m., according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. It was not immediately clear who fired the shots, but the sheriff’s office said “the gunman is one of the dead.”

It was not immediately clear what had led to the shooting or if there had been any other injuries.

“This is not an active shooter situation,” said Teri Barbera, spokesperson for the sheriff’s office. “The detectives are in the early stages of determining what led to the shooting. “

The sheriff’s office said authorities found the bodies of a man, woman and child when they entered the store. Their names and ages and were not immediately released. Authorities did not say whether the three people knew each other.

The store is located in a mall called Crossroads, next to Okeechobee Boulevard and Royal Palm Beach Boulevard. The village of Royal Palm Beach is approximately 12 miles west of Palm Beach, Florida.

“Our hearts go out to those affected by this tragedy,” Publix spokesperson Maria Brous said in a statement. “We are cooperating with local law enforcement.”

Images of helicopters from local television stations showed a strong police presence, with around 15 police cars at the scene.

An employee at a nearby Dollar Tree store said the plaza was locked.

Joey Mendoza, 62, told the Sun Sentinel he was parking in the parking lot towards the Publix when he saw police cars and officers, some in tactical gear, approaching the store.

“I saw them come running in, I did not get out of the vehicle,” he said. “They kept coming. Cruiser after cruiser, ambulance after ambulance, fire truck after fire truck.
