$2m grant to provide much-needed rail viaduct in Sheffield

COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – A long-awaited railway viaduct has been given the green light for construction in Sheffield.

Congressman Robert Aderholt (AL-04) announced funding for the grant on Tuesday.

“I am pleased to announce that the Northwest Alabama Council of Local Governments (NACOLG) has been awarded a grant totaling $2,000,000 for the design and construction of a causeway and bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad near Montgomery Avenue in Sheffield, Alabama,” he said in a statement.

News 19 has repeatedly reported the frustration caused by trains being parked on the tracks, sometimes for days, preventing residents and first responders from traveling.

“Trains are constantly blocking the crossing, sometimes for days, causing major traffic delays. Travelers are rerouted from the crossing to longer routes and first responders are hampered in getting to the emergency room. This viaduct will relieve roadway stress on travelers and open up a consistently reliable route through the city,” Aderholt said.

The funds come from the United States Department of Transportation under the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability & Equity (RAISE) grants.
