While France should in all likelihood finish first in their group, the runners-up in Group C, who should be their opponents in the Round of 16, is still unknown. Update on the different scenarios.
Already qualified, France has a very good chance of finishing in first position in Group D even if it loses this Wednesday against Tunisia. Only a big defeat, coupled with a big Australian victory against Denmark, could deprive the Blues of first place in favor of Australia. But the Blues with a goal difference greater than that of Australia (+4 against -2), it would take a totally incredible scenario for France to finish 2nd. For the potential opponent of the Blues in the round of 16, we will assume that France will finish at the top of their group.

Group C which crosses with that of the tricolors is much more uncertain. At the moment Poland is in the lead with 4 points, Argentina 2nd with 3 points, Saudi Arabia with 3pts and Mexico with 3pts. All four are possible opponents of the men of Didier Deschamps in the round of 16.
The most likely scenarios
As in 2018 the French team could find the Albiceleste in the round of 16. To do so would require a draw between the Argentines and the Poles, coupled with a meager victory for Mexico against Saudi Arabia. Lewandowski’s Poland could find Mbappé’s France team if they lose to Argentina and Mexico win against the Saudis.
Currently 3rd and 4th in their Group, Saudi Arabia and Mexico are less likely opponents. The Mexicans will have to impose themselves largely against the Saudis hoping for a wide defeat of Poland against Argentina, to finish second. The Saudis will have to win to qualify. If they win against Mexico, the meeting between Poland and Argentina must not end in a draw, for Hervé Renard’s men to finish in 2nd position.
In any case, the answer will be given this Wednesday evening around 10 p.m., at the end of the Group C meetings.
