2022 California Primary Election Results: Top Races, Including Governor, Attorney General and Superintendent of Public Instruction

Governor of California

Incumbent Governor Gavin Newsom faces a field of two dozen re-election candidates, but none seem to give him a serious scare in terms of polls and fundraising. The Democrat maintains high confidence and full campaign coffers after fending off a statewide recall effort last fall.

The candidate who has been endorsed by the state’s GOP is state senator Brian Dahle, who represents a district in the Sacramento area.

Another intriguing candidate is Bay Area environmentalist-turned-policy advocate Michael Shellenberg, author of “San Fransicko: How Progressives Ruin Cities.” The former Democrat is running without party preference.

Lieutenant Governor of California

Outgoing Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis also faces several opponents, including: Democrats William Saacke and Jeffrey Morgan; Republicans Angela Underwood Jacobs, David Fennell and Clint Saunders; NPP candidate David Hillberg and PFP candidate Mohammad Arif.

California Attorney General

Republicans believe they have a chance this year to unseat Democratic Attorney General Rob Bonta.

But first, they must determine which challenger has the best chance.

Two Republicans are campaigning for the June 7 primary. But so is Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert, who renounced her Republican affiliation four years ago and is running as an independent.

The GOP hopes a tough on crime message will resonate with voters.

The state’s Republican Party has endorsed former federal prosecutor Nathan Hochman. Eric Early, who was also the lead legal adviser in the failed effort to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom, is also running as a Republican.

Here is a complete list of candidates:

  • Anne Marie Schubert (independent)

California Secretary of State

A Republican slate hopes to overthrow California Secretary of State Shirley Weber.

His Republican challengers include: Rob Bernosky, Rachel Hamm, Raul Rodriguez and James Paine.

Green Party candidate Gary Blenner and NPP’s Matthew Cinquanta are also challenging the incumbent in hopes of becoming the next Secretary of State.

California State Treasurer

Democrat and current California state treasurer Fiona Ma hopes to keep her job by winning re-election against Republicans Andrew Do and Jack Guerrero, as well as PFP candidate Meghann Adams.

Superintendent of Public Instruction

Incumbent Tony Thurmond is seeking re-election for a four-year term and has six challengers:

  • Marco Amaral, special educator
  • Joseph Campbell, Montessori Education Specialist
  • Lance Christensen, vice president of education policy and government relations at the California Policy Center
  • Jim Gibson, cybersecurity professional and former Vista School Board trustee
  • Ainye Long, math professor and department chair at San Francisco Unified
  • George Yang, Software Architect

One of the main tasks for the department is to help students get back on track, as national reports show a drop in student reading levels during the COVID-19 pandemic.
