Nearly $ 2 million worth of illegal drugs were discovered this week in the waters off the Florida Keys, according to the US Border Patrol.
Boaters found 73 pounds of cocaine and 62 pounds of marijuana between Friday and Saturday, Border Patrol spokesman Adam Hoffner said.
“The increase in stranded narcotics indicates that smugglers continue to operate along the Florida coast,” Hoffner said in a statement. “We are grateful for the community’s support for our border security mission here in Florida.”
A boater south of Key Largo on Friday found a large bag containing 25 packets of cocaine. The person called authorities and border patrol officers assigned to Miami recovered the drugs.
Hoffner said the transport had an estimated market value of $ 1.7 million.
On Saturday, another boater found a large bag containing five packages of marijuana south of Marathon. This person also reported the find and border patrol agents recovered the contraband, Hoffner said.
The Border Patrol estimates that marijuana has a market value of $ 100,000.
