19 dead after plane crash in Lake Victoria

A plane crashed into Lake Victoria on Sunday morning as it approached an airport in Tanzania, killing 19 people on board, the country’s prime minister has said. A senior police officer said it was raining when the plane plunged into the water.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa raised the death toll of three previously announced. Local authorities said earlier on Sunday that 26 of the 43 people on board the Precision Air flight from the coastal city of Dar es Salaam had been rescued and taken to hospital. It was unclear whether the new death toll included those who died in hospital.

Photos showed the plane, which was heading for Bukoba airport, largely submerged in the lake. Precision Air is a Tanzanian airline.

“We managed to rescue a number of people,” Kagera province police commander William Mwampaghale told reporters.

“When the plane was about 100 meters (328 feet) in the air, it encountered problems and bad weather. It was raining and the plane plunged into water,” he said.

Mwampaghe said rescue efforts were continuing.
