18-year-old died in Birmingham after shooting near Wenonah High School

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (WIAT) – An 18-year-old died after a shooting near Wenonah High School on Wednesday night.

Birmingham Police said during a press briefing that Deandre Haggard was shot dead at Kimbrough Homes near Wenonah High School at around 8 p.m.

Officers patrolling the housing community responded to a call for gunfire, according to Sgt. Rodarius Mauldin with the Birmingham Police Department. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found Haggard suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead instantly.

Mauldin said police had “very limited information” after their preliminary investigation and the suspect (s) responsible for the shooting were still at large.

At Wednesday night’s press conference, Mauldin also touched on other recent shootings in the city that affected young people.

“As we endure gun violence in the city and its surroundings, the message would be conflict resolution, community engagement,” he said. “We need all of our different partners to participate. It starts with the family raising their children the right way. “
