16 Lawmakers Arrested in Supreme Court Amid Abortion Rights Protest

Just one more a dozen Democratic lawmakers were arrested while participating in an abortion rights protest outside the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday.

Demonstrators marched arm in arm shouting “our body, our choice” and “we will not go back” to protest the court’s decision last month to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade who protected the right to abortion throughout the country.

A total of 34 people, including 16 lawmakers, have been arrested, according to US Capitol police.

Those arrested include Rep. Alma Adams (DN.C.), Cori Bush (D-Mo.), Andy Levin (D-Mich.), Carolyn B. Maloney (DN.Y.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ( DN.Y.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.).

The arrests were for congestion or obstructing traffic and came after three warnings, authorities said.

“There is no democracy if women do not have control over their own bodies and decisions about their own health, including reproductive care,” Maloney said in a statement released by her office during her visit. arrest.

Maloney called it a privilege to represent his state of New York, where lawmakers worked to enshrine the right to abortion in the state constitution. But she said her job isn’t done until millions of women outside her state get the same reproductive rights.

“The Republican Party and the right-wing extremists behind this decision are not pro-life, but pro-body control for women, girls, and anyone who might get pregnant,” Maloney said. “Their ultimate goal is to institute a national ban on abortion. We won’t let them win. We will be back.”
