12 migrants rescued on the Texas Border River in a single afternoon

Del Rio Sector Border Patrol agents rescued 12 migrants from drowning in the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass, Texas in a single afternoon.

Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Officer Jason D. Owens tweeted footage of Eagle Pass Riverine Unit officers rescuing migrants from the fast currents of the border river that separates Texas and Mexico . In a single afternoon, officers rescued 12 migrants as they lost their footing while illegally crossing the border from Mexico.

On April 13, a group of migrants entered the waters of the Rio Grande near the Camino Real international bridge. The fast currents of the Border River caused migrants to lose their footing and disperse them along the river, according to a statement from Border Patrol officials.

Riverine unit officers make multiple trips and quickly deploy flotation devices and rescue ropes. They then rescued individual migrants and transported them to the riverbank where ground-based officers took them into custody.

EMS units arrived and offered medical assistance. The migrants refused treatment and officers transported them to the Eagle Pass centralized processing center for assessment and treatment.

Although no one died in this incident, other migrants were not so lucky. On April 12, Randy Clark of Breitbart Texas reported the drowning deaths of two migrant children and four adults near Eagle Pass. The six deaths occurred between Sunday and Tuesday.

On April 11, officers reported that a 14-year-old girl and a baby had been taken away while trying to cross the border. At press time, officers had yet to recover the bodies of the missing children.

Eagle Pass officers recovered the bodies of eight other migrants during a two-week period in March, Breitbart reported. One of those victims was a four-year-old child who was swept away from his mother’s arms by the current, Breitbart Texas reported. A few days later, while Breitbart was scouring the area and speaking with officers from the Marine unit, officers found the child’s lifeless body.

Breitbart Texas contacted CBP officials to confirm the number of drownings over a short period in that Texas border area alone. Officials responded that they would not release those numbers at this time and offered no further comment.
