115 immigrants crammed into an 18-wheeler in Texas

Texas Border Patrol agents stopped three 18-wheelers to apprehend nearly 200 undocumented immigrants sardonically inside – including 115 who were crammed into a compartment, authorities said.

The 115 immigrants, including three unaccompanied children, were discovered hiding in the tractor-trailer Thursday night in Laredo, Border Patrol said.

Authorities said they spotted the suspicious vehicle and attempted to stop it by lighting their patrol signs, but the truck continued to drive.

Officers eventually arrested the driver near mile 10, authorities said. A search revealed immigrants from Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala hiding inside.

Photos released Saturday by authorities showed dozens of immigrants crammed into a compartment of the tractor-trailer.

“They’re lucky it was cold in Laredo when it happened. Inside those trailers it can get up to 115, 120 degrees, and then with that many people in there, it’s extremely dangerous,” said Sara Melendez, spokeswoman for the US Border Patrol sector. Laredo.

U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to Laredo North Station intercepted a human smuggling attempt involving a tractor-trailer north of Laredo, Texas.

“There is no ventilation, there is nothing. It’s just a closed and sealed box,” she said.

Another 78 immigrants were found inside two other trucks during smuggling attempts last week, authorities said. All three smuggling attempts were foiled within 36 hours of each other.

The drivers in all three incidents are U.S. citizens, Border Patrol said. All drivers and immigrants are currently in custody.
