1 soldier dead and 9 injured after lightning strike at military base in Georgia

A U.S. Army Reserve soldier died and nine others were injured after a lightning strike while on a range in Fort Gordon, Georgia, a base spokesperson said. at ABC News.

“It is with a heavy heart that Fort Gordon confirms that one of the soldiers injured in the lightning strike this afternoon has succumbed to his injuries,” base spokeswoman Anne Bowman told ABC News. “No names will be released until next of kin have been notified.”

Bowman said the incident occurred around 11:10 a.m. in Training Area 26 when there was inclement weather in the area and the soldiers “received injuries associated with a lightning strike in one of their training areas”.

“We know there were injuries, but we don’t know the extent of those injuries,” Bowman told ABC News.

The Fort Gordon Department of Emergency Services and Emergency Medical Services immediately responded to the scene, according to Augusta ABC affiliate WJBF.

The soldiers were taken to the base’s Dwight David Eisenhower Medical Center for treatment, according to Bowman.
