1 person detained following deadly shooting of UPS driver in Irvine – NBC Los Angeles

A UPS driver was killed Thursday after being shot multiple times inside his work truck in Irvine, police said.

The Irvine Police Department said on X, formerly Twitter, that it received a call shortly after 3 p.m. about a man shot near Chrysler and Bendix. A police spokesperson told NBC4 that a UPS truck was involved and its driver died.

Aerial footage from NewsChopper4 showed police tape surrounding the truck parked along a street.

Hours after the shooting, law enforcement located a pickup truck that matched the description of a suspicious vehicle provided by witnesses. The driver of the pickup truck, which was located along State Route 261 and Santiago Canyon Road, has since refused to exit the vehicle and barricaded himself inside.

Around 6:30 p.m., the police were able to take this individual into custody. His identity was not immediately made public.

Details about what led to the shooting were not immediately available. Although the motive remains unclear, police do not believe the violence stemmed from a theft since nothing was taken from the UPS truck.
