One person was killed Thursday night when a vehicle was hit by an Amtrak train and then burst into flames in the northern suburb of Deerfield, authorities said.
At approximately 6:55 p.m., the Amtrak Hiawatha 340 train was traveling south toward Chicago near Lake Cook Road when it collided with a vehicle for an unknown reason.
The person in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene and has not been identified.
The train tracks were closed as police conducted an investigation, authorities said. At around 7:17 p.m., Amtrak tweeted that the train had been stopped north of Glenview due to a “vehicle incident.”
The railroad company later said the train was canceled and alternate commuter rail transportation was provided.
Additional information was not immediately available.
