One person was killed and at least 13 injured in a shooting at a Kroger grocery store Thursday afternoon in suburban Memphis, Tennessee.
Officers responded to reports of an active shooter at the supermarket in Collierville, a suburb about 30 miles east of downtown Memphis, just after 1:30 p.m. local time, the police chief said. of Collierville, Dale Lane.
The suspect died from what authorities believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
“The suspected gunman’s vehicle is in the parking lot and we are waiting for additional equipment to arrive here so that we can safely check this vehicle as well as some property that was on it,” Lane said.
At least 12 were taken to local hospitals and one person entered a hospital for treatment, Lane said. Some victims appeared to have been taken to Regional One Health Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center, NBC affiliate WREG reported.
At least one person was killed in the shooting.
The extent of the injuries is not yet clear, although Lane described them as “serious”.
Authorities are working with witnesses to understand what happened before the shooting and had no information on the motive.
“There were a lot of employees working,” Lane said. “We found people hiding in freezers and in locked offices… they were doing what they were trained to do: run, hide, fight. And so, you know, I hate that we have to do it here.”
Lane also addressed a photo of a man on the roof of the store circulating on social media, saying he couldn’t officially deny that the person was still the shooter, but that an employee should be extricated from the roof.
“I was part of a team that pulled a Kroger employee from the top of the building,” Lane said. “So it’s more than likely that it was a Kroger employee who worked on the roof.”
