1 dead in Tuesday morning shipwreck near Athens

ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) – One person was killed in a crash before 9 a.m. Tuesday on Highway 72.

East Limestone Fire Department Chief Tony Kirk confirmed the accident involved only one vehicle. He says the driver was heading west and crashed at Mooresville Road.

Kirk confirmed the driver was pronounced dead.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) was at the scene of the wreckage and will investigate the cause of the crash.

Kirk says the vehicle may have crossed the median and eastbound lanes before landing in the ditch on the east side.

The name of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
