1 dead, 2 teenagers injured after hand grenade explodes in Indiana home

A father has died and two of his children were injured after a hand grenade exploded Saturday at an Indiana home, authorities said.
The family was rummaging through a grandfather’s belongings when they found the pomegranate in their home in Lakes of the Four Seasons, Indiana. The Lake County Sheriff’s Department said someone “pulled the pin on the device and it exploded.”
Officers responded to the blast around 6:30 p.m. local time Saturday. They found an unresponsive man and two injured teenage boys at the scene, the sheriff’s department said in a Facebook post.
It is not known if the grenade exploded inside the house. Police did not immediately respond to a USA TODAY request for comment.

The sheriff’s department said the father was later pronounced dead. Responders took her two children, a 14-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman, to the hospital with shrapnel injuries, the sheriff’s department said.
Officers called the Porter County Bomb Squad to secure the area and “determine if there might be any other explosive devices,” the sheriff’s department said.
Homicide detectives from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and the CSI Unit are investigating the incident.
